Verbos Modais

Can, could and (be) able to:

Usamos o “can” para dizer que algo é possível de ser feito, ou para dizer que alguém pode fazer alguma

coisa.

A estrutura de seu uso é can + infinitivo (can work/can see etc):

I can see your father over there.

Can you speak English?

I can send you the documents by e-mail if you like.

A forma negativa de can é can´t.

I can´t come to the game tomorrow because I´ll be working.

Também podemos usar o “(be) able to” para indicar as mesmas situações indicadas acima; no entanto,

“can” é a forma mais usada:

Are you able to speak English?

No entanto, “can” só pode ser usado no presente (can) ou no passado (could); assim, se quisermos

indicar algum outro tempo verbal, teremos que usar “(be) able to”:

I can´t eat. Mas... I haven´t been able to eat because I´ve got a stomach ache.

Could, como foi dito, é o passado de can. Nós o usamos principalmente com:

See hear smell taste feel remember understand

I could smell your food from two hundred miles!

He was shouting, but I could understand what he said.

They could speak English and German at the same time!

I was alone in Paris. I could do what I wanted!

A forma negativa de could é couldn´t:

I couldn´t read the magazine this morning because I was late.

We could go to the movies tonight. What do you think?

There´s somebody knocking at the door. It could be Mary.

Agora compare could (do) e could have (done):

I´m so hungry. I could eat a whole cow!

I was so hungry. I could have eaten a whole cow!

Geralmente, usamos o could have (done) para ações possíveis de serem realizadas, mas as quais, por

algum motivo, não foram realizadas:

Why did you go to the party alone? I could have gone with you, if you had called me up.

Could have done = would have been able to

Must e can´t

You have spent all day long working. You must be very tired.

She has been travelling around the world for years. She must know lots of different cultures.

You have slept all day long! You can´t be tired now.

Preste atenção em suas respectivas estruturas:

I/You/He,etc must be (tired/hungry,etc)

can´t be (doing/visiting,etc)

do/go/visit,etc

May e might

Usamos may ou might para dizer se algo é uma possibilidade ou não. Geralmente, ambas as formas são

aceitas:

It may be false. Ou It might be false. (talvez seja falso)

As formas negativas são might not (mightn´t) e may not.

Para indicarmos passado, usamos may have (done) ou might have (done):

He may have left his bag at the airport.

I might have slept during the film.

Também usamos may e might para falar sobre ações possíveis de serem realizadas no futuro:

I may go to Japan on my vacations.

Ou, ainda, podemos aplicar o may/might + be –ing:

Don´t wait for me at 8:30! I might be working at this time. (I´ll be working at this time).

Should we wait for our father?

We might as well. I need to talk to him about my birthday party.

Must e have to

Usamos o must ou o have to para indicarmos obrigação:

I have to do my homework now. Ou I must do my homework now.

I must talk to her today. Ou I must talk to her tomorrow. Mas:

I had to talk to him yesterday. Ou Have you ever talked to him?

Na forma negativa, mustn´t e don´t have to têm significados completamente diferentes:

You mustn´t tell your boyfriend about our relationship!

You don´t have to wait for my sister if you don´t want.
